Like everyone we are currently searching for places to visit that are outdoors and not too expensive, one of the places that ticks all the boxes are Gruffalo Trails.

There are various trails, some involving wooden carvings, others virtual Gruffalo spotters Trails which are great fun, so if you are wondering is there is a Gruffalo trail near me, read on to discover exactly where they are.

Most of the Gruffalo Trails are found at Forestry England locations, although they are very popular, so you may find some extras popping up throughout the country.

You can also find (sometimes alongside) Superworm Trails at many of the locations

What is a Gruffalo Sculpture Trail ?

Take a walk in the deep, dark woods to see what creatures you can find, each of the Gruffalo wooden statues are in a different pose, why not plot a Gruffalo Map when you’re on your holidays and see if you can grab a photo of each of them. Not all of the sculpture trails have all of the characters as sculptures, some are pictures.

Before you begin the trail, pick up a Gruffalo orienteering leaflet with a certificate and map for just £1.50. There are 12 locations across the UK offering Gruffalo Orienteering.

Its a great, fun activity for the whole family, and the perfect place to teach children how to map read in an enjoyable way.

Bedgebury Gruffalo Trail Experiences

Bedgebury Gruffalo Trail Sculptures – Visit the visitor centre information office for clues on where to find the sculptures.

The grade is classed as Various.

Bedgebury National Pinetum is 128 hectares and the six large wooden Gruffalo sculptures are hiding amongst the trees. The Gruffalo, Fox, Mouse, Snake, Squirrel and Owl are spread out across the whole pinetum.

Is this activity for you?

Only you know your limits! Watch out for bumpy ground and a few steep slopes but there’s also many benches. It’s lovely to discover the Gruffalo together, but you can always send out scouting groups whilst others (young and old) rest.

Trail Length

Gruffalo sculptures are dotted around the National Pinetum so you can find them whilst exploring, the shortest route between them all is 3.5km.

It’s a good idea to download our explorer’s guide or take a picture of the map at the visitor centre before you start your adventure.

Our Gruffalo sculpture at Delamere Forest has been enjoying cuddles and photo opportunities for many years. It is a much-loved feature of our forest but as it is made of natural materials and has been outside for so long it has now been removed.

Each sculpture has been carved in a different position – can you find them all?

The easiest route to the Gruffalo sculptures in the Old Arboretum is to head up Mitchell Drive and take the first left towards Acer Glade.

Keep straight through Acer Glade and at the T junction turn right towards Loop Walk. At the next T junction turn left and the Gruffalo sculpture should be in sight.

The other sculptures are close by in a loop. Please ask for more help and a map at the Welcome Building on arrival.

Please note that the majority of sculptures are located in our ‘dog free’ area in the Old Arboretum, so dogs are not permitted on this trail.

If you would like to see the Gruffalo sculptures but are visiting with a dog, please head to Silk Wood, where you can find the Gruffalo’s Child. The Gruffalo’s child is located on Barn Walk.

This trail is by the Horsenden Farm and is a great trip to bring your children. There are educational posters found along the trail that make for a fun and rewarding family adventure. It is approx 0.8km, You will see the trail map as soon as you arrive, take a quick photo to be sure not to get lost.

Gruffalo Trail Dean Heritage Centre

Location : Camp Mill, Soudley, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, GL14 2UB

The woodland trail is open all year round. Set in amongst the five acre site, wander with the famous mouse as he makes his journey through the woodland surrounding the Dean Heritage Centre and meet the various animals along the way!

Queenswood Country Park Gruffalo Trail

Location : Dinmore Hill, Leominster, Herefordshire, HR6 0PY

The Gruffalo Trail features five, larger-than-life sculptures of characters Can you find Mouse, Fox, Snake, Owl and the Gruffalo. An activity pack with added extras to complete along the trail and do at home is available from the Queenswood gift shop.

The trail is open all year-round, it’s aimed at children age 2 to 6 but is a great family activity. The trail is less than 1.5km and suitable for pushchairs.

The site is open from dawn to dusk with most facilities open from 10am to 4pm daily. Facilities include toilets, baby changing, cafe/restaurant, gift shop and picnics are welcome.

Ardkinglas Gruffalo Trail

Location : Estate Office, The Square, Cairndow, Argyll, PA26 8BH

The short trail uses boards showing selected extracts from the Scots version of the Gruffalo to link the story to the setting of this special corner of the Woodland Garden.

Kilmardinny Loch Gruffalo Walk

Location : Bearsden, G61 3NF

The walk around Loch Kilmardinny will reveal some of the well known characters of The Gruffalo as well as bugs, flowers and mushroom carvings.

Mount Vernon Community Gruffalo Trail

Location : 4 Carrick Dr, Mount Vernon, Glasgow G32 9HN

You can find Gruffalo characters along the Community woodland nature trail . Head up the path into the woods and you will find the Gruffalo, owl, fox and a bunch of other lovely wooden carvings from the book.

Gruffalo Walk Culloden

Location : Inverness, The Highlands, IV2 7BZ

A short walk through the woods will reveal various Gruffalo themed carvings, a nice easy walk, suitable for younger children.

Gruffalo Trail Wales

Mountain View Ranch

Experience the Gruffalo story at Mountain View Ranch with a trained Gruffalo guide to help you along the way. Meet characters from the story itself, and take in the atmosphere on your way around! Using your map and instructions navigate around the Ranch completing activities and collecting stamps as you go!
