Is There Strawberry Picking Near Me ?

One of our family’s favourite things to do is Strawberry picking, they are one of the soft fruits that everyone loves and with such a large family, a punnet from the supermarket doesn’t last very long.

Going along to a PYO Strawberry patch is great fun for the entire family, although it can be tough on the knees when bending down to the ground!

Some places have started to move away from growing them in the ground and instead are growing them on tabletops, we haven’t given that a go yet, but it sounds like a great idea for those that struggle on the ground.

Before you head out on your strawberry picking adventure, check out these

Strawberry Picking Tips

  • When you arrive, try heading to the the furthest part of the field, you will discover lots of fruit that nobody has touched yet, as many tend to head straight for the first few rows.
  • Always pick ripe strawberries, some look ripe but are only half ripe, and they are not like other fruit that ripen the longer you leave them, so check that the entire strawberry is red before picking.
  • Don’t pull the strawberry off, if you do this you will pull out the plug and the strawberry will be bruised and go off quickly, hold the stem above and break it off from there.
  • Don’t put strawberries in the fridge, they will lose their flavour, eat them as quickly as possible and best eaten warm (never a problem in our house!)
  • It’s best to try a strawberry to ensure they are ripe, but remember it is the farmers living, so just one should be fine, although at present it’s definitely worth checking what the rules are regarding restrictions.
  • This year I have seen many places already say their strawberries won’t be ready until late June, so it might be worth getting in contact the day before you plan to visit, to check they are open and the strawberries are ready to be picked.

The Benefits of Pick Your Own Strawberries Near Me

I will admit that PYO strawberries can work out slightly more expensive than buying them from a supermarket or ready picked, but the benefits are defnitely worth it.

You may have to you pay an entry fee at some PYO Farms, but this is usually deducted from whatever produce you buy.

  • The children can see exactly where their food comes from.
  • It reduces food miles, your strawberries don’t need to be transported from another country, when they are a short drive away.
  • They have a much better taste, when picked at the time they are supposed to.
  • It’s helping to support a local business. Farming is hard enough these days, so it’s nice to give something back locally.
  • It gets the entire family out of the house, everyone will enjoy walking (or running) up and down the strawberry patch looking for the biggest, juiciest strawberry.
  • Its about making memories with your children, I still have fond memories of going strawberry picking when I was a child, and it’s important for our children to experience these things too.

Parkside PYO

Location : Hadley Road, Enfield EN2 8LA

The family has been farming at Parkside Farm since 1938, when it was a mixed dairy and arable farm.

They first grew strawberries for Pick-Your-Own back in 1979 on a fairly limited scale (i.e. 4 acres), but have subsequently added many other fruit and vegetable crops. The total PYO area is now close to 50 acres with about 20 different crops grown!

In recent years they have invested very heavily into producing strawberries on a “Table-Top System”, which means you can pick without bending down!

The plants are grown in troughs filled with peat, supported by a steel structure, and crop for 1/2 years.

When the plants are finished, the troughs are emptied out onto the fields and incorporated into the soil.

All of the strawberry production is now on this system. They also utilise different varieties and techniques to spread the harvest.

In 1992 they hand built a new bigger “strawberry shed”. This is now the tea room/restaurant.

They now grow 10 acres of traditionally grown strawberries (8 different varieties), 3 acres of raspberries along with gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and blackberries. Sunflowers are also available for pick your own.

Strawberry Picking Staffordshire

Manor Farm Fruits

Location : Watling Street, Hints, Tamworth, B78 3DF

Our PYO fields are now open for the 2023 season. This is our 50th Year of PYO, so it’s going to be a summer of celebration and we just love seeing all our regular customers returning to the farm.

Our team has worked incredibly hard to enable us to open so early given the weather recently after the cold, dull Spring so far. We aren’t aware of any other farm in the area opening their PYO fields in May so we are really leading the way.

Due to the unpredictable weather, we are going to open our online bookings for just a few days at a time, allowing us to check how the crop is ripening and to ensure that we always have enough delicious strawberries available for everyone to pick.

All bookings this year will be online again, and this is a unique opportunity to get the very first strawberries of the season.

Our pick your own is currently closed. We estimate that it will not be open until at least the third week of June.

We do not take advanced bookings because the pyo is very weather dependent and will not be open every day.

Our aim is to have a succession of strawberry crops, by using different varieties and planting times. This hopefully provides fruit to pick from late June through to early September.

It doesn’t always work and occasionally during this time we sometimes have gaps in availability.
