One of our family’s favourite things to do is visiting a PYO Farm for fruit picking near me, having such a large family, a punnet of fruit from the supermarket doesn’t last very long!
Going along to a PYO Farm is great fun for the entire family, although it can be tough on the knees when bending down to the ground! Some places have started to move away from growing in the ground and instead are growing them on tabletops, we haven’t given that a go yet, but it sounds like a great idea for those that struggle on the ground.

The Benefits of Pick Your Own Fruit and Veg
I will admit that PYO can work out slightly more expensive than buying them from a supermarket or ready picked, but the benefits are definitely worth it. You may have to you pay an entry fee at some PYO Farms, but this is usually deducted from whatever produce you buy.
The children can see exactly where their food comes from.
It reduces food miles, your fruit and veg doesn’t need to be transported from another country, when they are a short drive away.
They have a much better taste, when picked at the time they are supposed to.
It’s helping to support a local business. Farming is hard enough these days, so it’s nice to give something back locally.
It gets the entire family out of the house, everyone will enjoy walking (or running) up and down the PYO place, trying to find the largest, tastiest prize of the day.
Its about making memories with your children, I still have fond memories of going strawberry picking when I was a child, and it’s important for our children to experience these things too.
Top Tips for visiting a Pick Your Own Farm
Taking a trip to the PYO Farm is fun and exciting, but with the English weather, slightly unpredictable, here are a few tips to help your PYO Trip go smoothly.
Call and confirm – Before setting off in the morning, its worth confirming that the PYO Farm is open, and if the produce you are wishing to pick is available that day, so its always advisable to ring beforehand or check their social media pages, prior to setting off.
Go early – Many of the crops, ripen daily, and get picked out by late morning. So arriving as the farm opens ensures you get exactly the selection you want, plus it avoids the hot sun and heat!
Drinks and snacks – Its always useful to bring something to drink with you, its thirsty work, picking your own and although many places do offer cafe facilities, they are sometimes located away from the picking area.
Dress Appropriately – You’re going into a field, it may be muddy, so dress in the correct clothing. Boots and old trainers, not high heels or flip flops!
Bug Spray – Bugs LOVE fresh fruit, so it might be worth bringing along some insect repellent, and if you have a reaction to bees or wasps, make sure you have everything you need with you, just in case!
Protect Yourself from the sun – Applying Suncream is advised before you set off, and if its very sunny, its worth making sure you have a hat with you, nobody wants too much sun on their head.
Check Payment Details – Ensure you have both cash and card, as many of the PYO Farms went card only and contactless during covid, so its worth checking their latest requirements.
Toilets – Some farms have toilet facilities, although they won’t be luxury bathrooms, others do not have any available, so if you’d rather not go whilst you’re out, make sure everyone goes before they leave home!
