As a large family, we’re always looking for days out that have enough going on to keep children of different ages entertained – which isn’t always easy when you’ve got little ones, older children and teenagers who have completely different ideas about what counts as fun!
That’s one of the reasons the Merlin Halloween events work so well.
At one end of the scale you’ve got LEGO pumpkins, trick or treating and friendly Halloween characters for younger children. At the other, there are rides in the dark, scare zones and mazes that even the teenagers might think twice about entering.
For Halloween 2026, Alton Towers, Chessington, LEGOLAND Windsor, Thorpe Park, Warwick Castle and SEA LIFE attractions are all getting into the spooky spirit.

The big Merlin theme parks are probably where you’ll find the most elaborate Halloween celebrations.
Each has a slightly different feel, so choosing the right one really depends on the ages of your children – and exactly how brave everyone is!
Alton Towers Scarefest 2026

Alton Towers really comes into its own at Halloween.
Scarefest returns for 2026 with a mixture of family-friendly Halloween fun during the day and much scarier experiences for older children and adults.
One of the highlights is simply being able to experience some of the rides as darkness falls.
If your children are thrill-seekers, tackling rides such as Nemesis Reborn, The Smiler and Wicker Man in the dark adds a completely different dimension to the day.
Halloween at Alton Towers for Younger Children
Don’t assume Scarefest is only for teenagers.
Alton Towers has a whole programme of family Halloween entertainment, with shows, meet-and-greets, photo opportunities and trick-or-treat-style experiences.
For 2026, Amigos in the Afterlife takes families into a colourful Día de los Muertos-inspired world filled with friendly spirits and spooky effects.
It’s designed to offer the Halloween atmosphere without the full-on scares of the adult mazes.
Halloween at Alton Towers for Older Children
This is where things become considerably scarier.
Alton Towers has dedicated scare attractions, with several experiences recommended for ages 12+.
New attractions for 2026 include Final Exhibit and Edge of the Forest, both recommended for guests aged 12 and over.
There’s even a new immersive Dine with the Dead experience for ages 14+, complete with entertainment and a three-course meal.
Best for: Families with mixed-age children and teenagers who want proper Halloween scares.

LEGOLAND Windsor Brick or Treat 2026

If you’ve got younger children who love Halloween but aren’t so keen on being scared witless, Brick or Treat at LEGOLAND Windsor is one of the best choices.
The whole resort gets a Halloween makeover, with spooky LEGO decorations, themed photo opportunities and plenty of family-friendly entertainment.
There are Halloween characters to meet and, of course, the rides and attractions are still part of your day.
LEGOLAND specifically describes Brick or Treat as suitable for toddlers and younger children, so this is very much at the fun rather than frightening end of the Halloween scale.
Costumes are encouraged too, although full face masks and imitation weapons aren’t allowed.
Halloween Short Breaks at LEGOLAND
If one day isn’t enough, you can turn your visit into a Halloween short break.
Packages include an overnight stay, breakfast and theme park admission, with additional benefits when staying at one of LEGOLAND‘s on-site hotels.
Best for: Toddlers, primary-school-aged children and LEGO fans.

Chessington Howl’o’ween 2026
Dates: 3rd–4th, 10th–11th and 17th October–1st November 2026
Chessington’s Howl’o’ween is another excellent choice if you want plenty of Halloween atmosphere without making the entire day terrifying.
For 2026, families can expect Halloween entertainment, shows, rides at dusk and the chance to experience the park with a completely different atmosphere as daylight disappears.
There’s also Enchanted Hollow – Trick or Treat, where families can meet characters and collect sweet treats along the way. This is an optional paid extra on top of theme park admission.
And, of course, you’ve still got Chessington‘s rides and animals to enjoy during your visit.
Want Something Scarier?
Older children aren’t forgotten.
The 2026 event also includes the Stone Watchers: Vampire’s Lair scare zone for families wanting to turn the fear factor up a little.
Best for: Families with primary-school children and siblings of different ages.
Our tip: Staying until dusk can completely change the atmosphere, particularly for children who normally only visit theme parks during daylight hours.

Warwick Castle Halloween 2026
The Haunted Castle: 24th October–1st November 2026
Castle After Dark: 24th and 29th–31st October 2026
Warwick Castle has cleverly split its Halloween celebrations into two very different experiences.
And as a parent, this makes choosing the right one considerably easier!
The Haunted Castle – Family Halloween Fun
During October half term, Warwick Castle transforms into The Haunted Castle.
There are more than 15 shows and attractions, with mysterious mazes, Halloween entertainment and spooky surprises dotted around the castle and grounds.
New for 2026 is a family-friendly Scarecrow Disco, plus Welcome to the Spirit Hotel, where rather unusual guests appear to have checked in and never left…
Despite the spooky theme, Warwick Castle confirms that The Haunted Castle is designed as a family event and is suitable for all ages.
Best for: Families and younger children.
Castle After Dark – For Braver Families
Once darkness falls, things get considerably less child-friendly!
Castle After Dark runs from 6pm–10pm on selected evenings and includes live entertainment and scare attractions.
Two new experiences arrive for 2026: The Other Side, based around a supernatural gateway opened during an abandoned séance, and The Terror, set during the plague.
Warwick Castle recommends Castle After Dark for older children, with individual guidance worth checking before booking.
So if your six-year-old says they’re definitely brave enough because they watched Hotel Transylvania without hiding behind a cushion, we’d probably still choose the daytime event!

Thorpe Park Fright Nights 2026
Dates: 2nd–4th October, 9th–11th October and 15th October–1st November 2026
If LEGOLAND sits at one end of our Halloween scare scale, Thorpe Park is firmly at the other.
2026 marks 25 Years of Fear at Thorpe Park‘s famous Fright Nights.
This is Halloween for families with older teenagers who actively enjoy being scared.
As darkness falls, you can ride some of Thorpe Park‘s biggest rollercoasters in the dark, including Hyperia and SAW – The Ride, before tackling scare zones and mazes around the park.
New for 2026 is Tenement, joining returning Halloween attractions and a revamped programme of shows and scare zones.
Thorpe Park recommends its scare attractions for ages 13+.
That doesn’t necessarily mean every 13-year-old is going to enjoy them – you know your own teenager best!
If someone jumps when the toaster pops up, perhaps start with LEGOLAND…

Halloween isn’t just about theme parks.
SEA LIFE centres around the UK transform into Ascarium: Tricks & Treats for spooky underwater adventures.
Rather than jump scares and terrifying mazes, this is aimed firmly at families with children.

Which Merlin Halloween Event Is Best for Your Family?
There really isn’t one answer because a Halloween event that delights a teenager could absolutely terrify a four-year-old.
For toddlers and preschoolers, we’d look first at LEGOLAND Brick or Treat or SEA LIFE Ascarium.
For primary-school-aged children, Chessington Howl’o’ween, LEGOLAND and Warwick Castle’s daytime Haunted Castle offer plenty of spooky atmosphere without concentrating entirely on scares.
For older children and young teenagers, Alton Towers Scarefest gives you the option of family activities alongside scarier attractions.
And for teenagers who really want to be frightened, Thorpe Park Fright Nights is the obvious one to investigate.

If you’re travelling a long way, several Merlin attractions offer Halloween short breaks.
These can be particularly useful during October half term because you don’t have the pressure of driving several hours home after a long day at a theme park.

Are Merlin Halloween Events Included With Normal Admission?
Sometimes.
Family Halloween entertainment at some attractions is included with your normal admission, but scare mazes, trick-or-treat experiences, evening events and other premium activities may require an additional ticket.
For example, Chessington’s Enchanted Hollow is an optional extra, while Warwick Castle’s Castle After Dark requires its own ticket rather than simply being included with daytime castle admission.
Check exactly what’s included before booking so you can budget for the whole day.
Tips for Visiting Merlin Attractions at Halloween
Book early. October half term and the weekends closest to Halloween can be extremely popular.
Check the scare rating. Don’t rely purely on the name of an attraction. One child’s excitingly spooky is another child’s I’m never sleeping again.
Check whether activities cost extra. Your theme park ticket doesn’t necessarily include every Halloween experience.
Pack layers. You could arrive on a mild October afternoon and be absolutely freezing by the time you’re riding rollercoasters after dark.
Take waterproofs. It is October in Britain, after all.
Consider staying later. If your children can manage it, theme parks feel completely different once darkness falls.
Think carefully about younger siblings. If your teenager wants to tackle a scare maze but you’ve also got a five-year-old, you may need to split up for part of the visit.
Check costume rules. Children are often encouraged to dress up, but individual attractions may have restrictions on masks, props and imitation weapons.
