Last night Neva and I went along to the opening night of & Juliet at Norwich Theatre, such was the buzz around this show before it arrived, that we were joined by Meg, Lochlan and Natalie!
So if you are wondering if its worth booking tickets to And Juliet, then read on….
What is & Juliet All About ?
There is life after Romeo!
Get whisked away on a fabulous journey as Juliet ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love—her way.
Created by the Emmy-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek,” this hilarious new musical flips the script on the greatest love story ever told and asks, what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo?
Juliet’s new story bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name, including Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time,” Katy Perry’s “Roar” and chart toppers “Since U Been Gone,” “It’s My Life,” “I Want It That Way,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” — all from Max Martin, the genius songwriter/producer behind more #1 hits than any other artist this century, and his collaborators.
Break free of the balcony scene and get into this romantic comedy that proves there’s life after Romeo. The only thing tragic would be missing it.
There were two cast substitutions last night, Anne Hathaway was played by Harriet Caplan-Dean, who was outstanding, and Harriet your mum was very proud and emotional!
Toni Paise played Eleanor and Benvolio, loved the skater boy vibes from Benvolio!
What Did We Think of And Juliet
All five of us LOVED it! It was a like a big Shakespearean pop concert!
I loved the banter between Will (Matt Cardle) and Anne (Harriet Caplan-Dean) and could totally relate to her night off from the kids! Their re writing of Romeo and Juliet certainly made for a new generation of Shakespeare lovers!
Juliet’s nurse Angelique (Sandra Marvin) was brilliant, and the scenes between her and her long lost love Lance (Ranj Singh) had me in stitches, they were SO funny together.
Jack Danson’s portrayal of Romeo could certainly give Di Caprio a run for his money, although Kyle Cox as the other love interest Francois was also a great leading man, and I think i’d struggle which to choose. I’m also not sure i’ll look at Backstreet Boys’ ‘Everybody’ the same again!
Absolutely loved Jordan Broatch as Juliet’s friend May, they totally nailed the loyal, supportive best friend, even when they were both fighting for the same man!
Gerardine Sacdalan was a very powerful Juliet, with great vocals and some kick ass dance moves.
The staging was epic, with confetti cannons, flying Romeo’s and lots of bright colours, that rocketed Romeo and Juliet’s balcony right into the 21st century!
The ensemble were on point and the dance routines were fabulous!
They received a full standing ovation, which was well deserved, it had lots of Shakespeare puns, well known pop tunes and plenty of sparkles, you left the theatre feeling upbeat and happy about the world!
So, if you are wondering what to do this week, do yourselves a favour and grab tickets to the alternative Romeo and Juliet story, you won’t be disappointed, and I guarantee you’ll still be singing along to the tunes the next day! And checking out the playlist on spotify!
